The training division of a major heavy machinery manufacturer wanted to make sure it was producing the training materials that dealer managers valued most.

Objective:

Learn how the General Manager, Parts Manager, Sales Manager and Service Manager evaluated several proposed training topics. They especially wanted to know who would use an interactive unit on financial management, which had a high production cost.

Methodology:

A four-page self-administered questionnaire was prepared. It was sent to a large sample of the company's dealers. Responses were tabulated and interpreted by DC Surveys.

Results:

  • Enough General Managers requested training for the Financial unit to justify the costs.
  • All levels of managers wanted more training in staff motivation and communication, and in dealing with customers (these topics were not part of the existing budget).
  • The training division received additional funds to produce new courses on staff motivation and dealing with customers.
